An casual introduction to the world of Ultra Mecha Battling Circuit

Hello! I'm D W O'Boyle.

Ever since diving into the deep end with 30 Minute Missions kits I've wanted to make a page specifically for all my OCs I've been making for them and that's what this page is.

Essentially this page will be in-character short fiction about a world of competitive mech combat set roughly 1000 years from now after a point called "The Second Dark Age" in an almost utopian "Stellar Era." It follows the Ultra Mecha Battling Circuit, a fighting tournament series where people from around the solar system fight across three divisions to be the strongest Battler.

Touchstones include things like:

  • G Gundam
  • the duels from Witch From Mercury
  • obviously Pro Wrestling to a certain degree (though most of what I know is through osmosis)
  • following Competitive Fighting Games on both during and out of tournaments

Each post, unless otherwise marked, will describe a pilot (aka a Battler) and their mech. Many will be written from the perception of press articles, sports commentators, round-table discussions, social media posts, etc. They will include images of the suit as built from the 30mm kits (mainly, but not exclusively) I have as well as made up stats for the mechs.

The general process is: I get a kit, come up with idea for it, likely get supplemental kits for additional parts, finalized the design, panel line and paint any necessary bits, then take photos. All the while I'm coming up with a pilot, their back story, and writing something short that describes their whole deal. Lastly I put together some nice looking images with graphs and other stuff. The posts themselves will lead with the images then have the piece about the Battler and their mech. Here are some examples of unfinished kits:

- The Last Call -
A mech that has been striped of the majority of it's armor and is missing it's right arm and bottom of it's right leg. It's left arm ends with an axe. It's pose is confident and ready for action.

- The Satin Wolf -
A a dog styled mech with a huge chaingun over it's left shoulder and an arm holding a gun coming out above it's right hip. It is sitting down like a dog would.

- Megabat -
A mech with a bat-like head and wings folded behind it. It carries the bazooka from the Gundam F91 and a short dark green beam sword.

I'm putting a lot of time, money, and effort into this so I hope it'll turn out well and that folks will enjoy it. In terms of frequency, I'm not expecting it to be daily. Hopefully weekly for a bit, but expect biweekly or monthly to be more likely. Especially once the majority of the lore is established and I can just put together fun weirdos with cool mechs. The more immediate future, expect posts about the background lore, circuit rules, etc that will go into set the table for what's to come. Obviously I still have a lot to do setting up this page. Gotta make some logos and all that!

I will be keeping the majority of main posts to a set of tags that you're welcome to follow or muffle. These include: #UMBC, #UMBC ooc, #UMBC meta, #UMBC battler, #UMBC setting, #UMBC answers. And others. Refer to the bio of this page for an updated list.

My hope for this project is that folks will enjoy it enough to write their own bits of short fiction or make fan art. I want UMBC to be a collaborative experience. If people start posting their own creations as part of this setting then that would make me so happy! I'm thinking of myself more as a GM/MC than principal creative.

While this is just a way for me to share a hobby of mine, I will have a ko-fi link in case people want to feed the hobby or send in tips, but it's a minor thing and I don't expect anyone to do that. I am financially stable, but these kits can be quite the money sink hahah.

See you all later, Battling Fans!

Note - 2024.09.09: this was originally posted on cohost with the intent to use that site's ask feature as a form of interaction. itch.io does not have such a feature and as of now I do not know how I will replicate it.
